Our Mission

Our Mission

Action In Africa is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in the United States, and community based organization that operates a thriving community center in Nakuwadde, Uganda.

Our mission is to advance the social, personal, and economic development of children, youth, and adults in Uganda through greater access to education and other life-changing resources.

Why Uganda?

Most people in Uganda live in extreme poverty. According to the World Bank, 42% of the population lives on just $2.15 per day.

This obstacle weaves its way into everyday life, negatively impacting aspects of wellbeing like food security, mental health, women’s rights, and education. The country’s population is growing far more rapidly than the rest of the world, yet most Ugandan students can not access education beyond the age of 13.

We Envision…

a future where entire communities are set up to thrive in all areas of life through greater access to education, creative expression, and physical activity. We have created programs built around the community, driven by research, data, and compassion. Our nonprofit model proves that when individuals earn opportunities for growth they are more committed to their own success and reinvesting in their community.

 We’ve Learned That...

Scholarship Not Sponsorship

We learned first-hand that scholarship funds are more sustainable and impactful. After years of sponsoring select students’ educations, we realized the program created a hierarchy in our partner schools and a sense of dependency amongst sponsorship recipients. In response to these problems, Action in Africa established a variety of scholarship funds that benefit hundreds of students.

Zero Handouts

We have found that freely distributing shoes, clothes, electronics, and other consumable products has created a cycle of dependency and lack of ownership. Instead, Acton in Africa offers reward-based services that have a lasting impact such as supplies that support education.

Community Driven

We humbly admit that many of our western-style efforts failed because we simply did not take the time to understand what the community needed. In response, Action in Africa hired a local Country Director for consistent on-the-ground leadership and responded to the community’s requests to implement an After School Program, free HIV testing clinics, adult English classes, and more. The vast majority of our goals, projects, and ideals start and end with our Ugandan team.
