Hi Friends!

At Action in Africa, we love the energy and enthusiasm that comes with the start of a new year. As an organization, we always take the month of January to recover from the chaos of Q4 fundraising and holidays, doing self-evaluations, setting goals for the months to follow, and recalibrating as a team. With 2021 long gone, we are officially settled into our 2022 groove and optimistic that this will be our best year yet!

We hope the start to your new year has been equally as productive and energizing. Thank you for following along and hope you enjoy these Action in Africa updates.

With gratitude,
Sarah Nininger and The Action in Africa Team

Finally, 2022 is the breath of fresh air that we have been eagerly waiting for! Lockdown restrictions in Uganda have been lifted and we are now starting to see some semblance of normalcy in Nakuwadde and specifically at The Center.  Here are some major updates from the last few weeks!
  • School in Uganda reopened in January after being closed for the majority of the last two years due to COVID-19 restrictions.
  • All our Secondary Scholarship Students are back in the classroom. This year we have 113 (63 girls and 50 boys) students in the program.
  • Just this week our Adult English Class Program resumed in person. Good luck to all the students on their placement exams!
  • Our Primary Partnership Program is back up and running, with two primary schools already on board. This means we are back to providing daily breakfast to 534 primary school students.
SCHOLARSHIP STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
We want to introduce you to one of Action in Africa's nineteen University Scholarship Recipients, Mugisha Courage.  Courage is 23 years old and has been an AIA scholarship recipient for the last 10 years, beginning in primary school, through completion of secondary school, and now university). He is currently enrolled at Clark International University where is he studying Clinical Medicine and Community Health. Below are pictures of him during his clerkships.

When asked about what his dreams are after he completes his diploma in December, he said "I would love to further my studies and become a specialist, preferably a physician (internal medicine). And of course, I dream of the Action in Africa hospital one day"!

Keep up the great work, Courage. We are so proud of you! If you want to send Courage a congratulatory or encouraging note, use the link below and we will pass it along to him!
SEND COURAGE A NOTE
Our 7th Annual Winter Gala was two months ago but we are still filled with awe and gratitude. Together we raised $100,000+ to support our community center in Nakuwadde! If you missed it, you can watch the event on our YouTube channel HERE. The live program begins at the 1:03:30 mark. Once again, thank you to everyone for making this event magical. It was a night we won't soon forget!
The start of the new year came with some changes for our stateside team. We said goodbye to our former USA Operations Manager, Alex Maple, as she pursues a new career in sustainability and food access. We look forward to her continued involvement with our young professional network, The Leadership Society. You can read her official farewell on our website HERE
As we grow and evolve as an organization, so does our team. In the next two months, we are hiring for full-time and part-time positions both in the USA and in Uganda. Continue to check our website for current employment opportunities.
