Journey to University: Diana

Hello everyone! My name is Namagala Grace Diana. I was an Action in Africa Secondary School scholarship student from 2016 to 2021. I’m very excited to have been selected for the University Scholarship program where I will be joining Makerere University to pursue a Bachelor Degree in Social Sciences.

I tried joining Action in Africa after my friend told me about the programs at the Centre in 2015 while on Primary Seven Vacation. The first time I visited the AIA Centre, there were so many students, I was so nervous to engage with such a big crowd of new faces.  

AIA had so many programs: debate, quiz, spelling bee, learning science, drama, arts and crafts, music, and dance. I was really fascinated by everything AIA had to offer but for a while, I was afraid of participating in them. But the AIA staff welcomed me and I saw how much they truly care about everyone at The Centre.  I decided to join the clubs I found most interesting.

Participating in the AIA programs like drama and debate helped me find friends and gain so many skills like reading, communication, and public speaking. It was through these programs that I was able to join the AIA secondary school scholarship program from senior one up to senior six.

For the last 6 months, I have been part of AIA’s internship program. During my internship, the AIA staff have provided me with valuable work experience and skills  like my computer lessons. Thanks to them, I am now able to use a computer effectively. I can send emails, manage files, and create with Photoshop. I’ve also  gained decision-making, presentation skills, participated in market surveys and community mapping programs. 

From my first step into The Centre, the one thing that has stuck with me more than anything is how welcoming, caring, and loving everyone is. They show empathy regardless of what kind of person you are, because of them I was able to gain my confidence, learn amazing skills and obtain an education – BRAVO TO AIA!
