Journey to University: Swabrah

My name is Nakamatte Swabrah, I am currently in the Action in Africa internship program, and I will soon be joining University on the AIA University Scholarship program. I attended Central College school in Nakuwadde for my High school and my primary school life at Bright Way primary school in Nakuwadde. I joined Action in Africa in 2016 and was subsequently enrolled in the Action in Africa Secondary scholarship program until I finished my secondary education.

While in this secondary scholarship program, there were so many other programs that I was able to  engage in: dance, music, spelling bee, debate, sports, and creative writing among others. Of all these programs I enjoyed the spelling bee and debate the most since I was never the best dancer you’ve ever seen. I learned a lot in the programs, especially how to socialize with the rest of peers, build teamwork, and above all build my self-esteem and self-confidence.

The most interesting program of my internship has been the computer session because I have been able to explore the world through computers. I am proud to say that while in the internship program, I have acquired many vital skills like computer skills, especially typing, and the use of Google Suites and Monday.com as a new way of working. As well as, interpersonal skills and self-discovery, human resource and interview skills. I have been through career counseling and mentorship sessions with our guidance counselors.

In addition, the internship has helped me give back to my community by getting involved in the afterschool program where we interact with children, help them out with homework, and support them with peer mentorship. Engaging in community programs like the medical outreach program is very important since we help out a lot, gathering feedback on how the medical outreach program has been.

Besides the skills I have got from the internship program,  I’ve made new friends and professional connections I wouldn’t have otherwise. The Centre is filled with a lot of social, loving, and friendly people and it made interacting with them easy.

I want to become a doctor, and by this, I shall be able to work with my organization to support the community of Nakuwadde and continue to help in the medical outreach program. I feel I must be a doctor because so many people need medical attention. I’m proud to be joining Mbarara University of Science and Technology to pursue my medical dreams. This has been the most impactful part of life’s journey so far. I’m proud to be part of Action in Africa.
