Hello Friends!

Spring is finally here and we're so excited to get outside! The Center is once again open and filled with the happy sound of community, and we are preparing for some exciting new programs this summer! We're not completely out of the woods as the threat of the pandemic still exists, but we're hopeful that as more and more people get vaccinated the center can continue on the path to opening up fully and operating as it once did. Even though things still aren't entirely back to normal, we have much to be thankful for as we wrapped up a hugely successful Computer Campaign, exceeding our goal by 44% to raise a whopping $5,056! We can't thank you enough for your continued support.

We have many exciting, meaningful updates to share below, we hope you'll scroll down to find out more about what we've been up to.

With gratitude,
Sarah Nininger and The Action in Africa Team

The AIA team in Uganda has BIG plans for this summer. Most exciting among them is that 200 P7 students will be joining us for a special new camp program from May through August!

Many of us are fortunate to have fond memories of summer camp, and we want to share that joy with our students in Uganda. After the challenging year we've all had, what could be better than playing and learning outdoors with friends? Primary 7 students going into Secondary School in September, will come to The Center for summer camp 5 days per week to participate in creative writing and storytelling work, dance and drama classes, weaving and craft making, board games and sports, and a hot lunch every day.

Through this program we will select the annual 30 recipients of our Secondary Scholarship Program. And the BEST part is that you can participate too!  To fund this special new program we're hosting a virtual camp with all your favorite classes from last year's Virtual Awareness Week. Scroll down for more information!
Last week, our leadership team held an election to select the top 5 students of our Secondary Scholarship Program who applied to join our upcoming Internship Program - leading directly into our University Scholarship Program! This process is directly related to our recent Computer Campaign, as those devices will be used by these new Interns as they prepare for University next January. Our staff worked together to design and implement their very own free and fair election for recent secondary graduates based the following criteria: completion of their A-level exams, on their attendance, active participation, and helpfulness at The Center. We cast our ballots and the votes are in! Stay tuned to learn more about our newest AIA interns.
Please join us in welcoming Alex Maple, our new US-based Operations Manager, to the AIA team. Alex comes to us with a wealth of experience and education in International Development. In fact, this is actually Alex's return to Action in Africa, as she formerly worked at The Center as the Women to Women Program Director from 2015 - 2016. We are thrilled to have Alex on board and look forward to all that she will bring to AIA!
Another unique way to support AIA is by purchasing this fantastic children's book written by our very own Board Member, Kris Ufkes. "Nini Bells explores the reality that many children, regardless of their age, race, religion or socioeconomic background, experience anxiety. As Nini takes us through her day and night of worries, young readers see her discuss her concerns with people who support her." A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Action in Africa. You can find Nini Bells here.

VIRTUAL WEEK IS COMING BACK

We're coming back! Last year, right around this time, we hosted our first ever Virtual Awareness Week. This fun-filled week of classes and experiences was such a success that we're bringing it back your favorites (and adding a few new classes too). SAVE THE DATE because it all begins on June 21st!
