Hi Friends!

Fall is here and with it comes the busiest time of year at Action in Africa! With our upcoming fall campaign, #GivingTuesday, and our annual winter event on the horizon we're busier than ever!

For the next two months, we will be supporting our team in Uganda as they administer the next iteration of our Long-Distance-Learning program which will run through the end of November. This program will support 600 students from our partner primary schools with at-home learning materials including educational worksheets and remote instruction, mindfulness exercises, art supplies, and more!

As always, we're working to empower the community of Nakuwadde with access to education and life-changing resources that will keep them happy, healthy, and safe. There are countless opportunities to get involved, scroll below to find out more!

With gratitude,
Sarah Nininger and The Action in Africa Team

Our team in Uganda continues to work through ongoing COVID-19 limitations yet they continue to reach the community in innovative ways that help to keep students and their families healthy and active.
  • Our leadership team just completed interviews for potential new scholarship recipients and selected 30 new students to officially join our Secondary Scholarship Program!
  • Until schools reopen primary students will be enrolled in our long-distance learning program (more on this below).
  • 15 students from our Secondary Scholarship Program are receiving private tutoring at The Center to review lessons and material they have been struggling with due to being out of the classroom.
  • Every Tuesday the AIA interns (our six future University Scholarship recipients) come to The Center to discuss Grit by Angela Duckworth as a part of AIA's book club and each Wednesday they join us for private computer classes.
  • We're also happy to share that the students from our Special Needs Program are once again receiving one-on-one personalized care at The Center; private physical and/or occupational therapy, and educational services.
Finally, you might remember from our last update that the Ugandan President declared that schools will remain closed until all students are vaccinated. In response to the very serious and detrimental cost of keeping students out of the classroom for an indefinite period of time, our Ugandan team has relaunched our Long-Distance-Learning Program which will benefit 600 students from our partner schools from September through November.

This weekly program costs approximately $15 per student! A remarkably modest amount given how holistic and essential this program is to our students' wellbeing. Even though this program is already underway, we still need your help. We need to raise $10,000 by the end of October to cover the cost of this program, and thanks to 3 generous donors we've secured a $10,000 match that will cover all administrative costs. Please consider helping us by contributing to this life-changing program!

We do our best to stay on top of current events related to the work we do! Here are some of the sources our team has enjoyed lately:
  • Read about Ugandans welcoming evacuees from Afghanistan.
  • Watch this video by the Brookings Institution discussing how to accelerate COVID-19 vaccinations in Africa.

  • Get inspired by Rick Risby’s speech about his inspiration to get through some of the hardest times in his life.
Here are some important dates to remember:
  • Our Long Distance Learning Campaign launches today! We are working to raise $20,000 with the help from 3 generous families who have pledged matching gifts up to $3,500 each. This means that each gift will be doubled up to $10,000!
  • #GivingTuesday is November 30th, the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving!
  • Our 7th Annual Winter Fundraiser will be held as a hybrid in-person and virtual event on December 17th. Details to come.
By supporting Action in Africa, you are helping us serve the children, women, and schools we work with in Uganda. Consider making a one-time or monthly tax-deductible contribution with the link below.
Thank you!
